Birthday Poem

Reaching for peace within, embracing the practice of self-love, this gives her the strength and courage to burst into bloom once again.

There came a time when the risk to

remain tight in the bud was more painful

than the risk it took to blossom.

—Anaïs Nin

She is a woman who spends a great deal of time contemplating how life could be better. She is well aware of the choices she has in her own life to promote her well-being. She also is aware of the impact her well-being (or lack thereof) has on those closest to her.

Making goals, attaining them and at times scrapping them, giving up on them or forgetting them in the messy processes of day-to-day life is a cycle she has perfected. Yet, when she gazes upon herself in the mirror she doesn’t feel accomplished. There is always something undone on the ever-growing “to-do” list and those items sting in her heart like a fire ant bite.

She sees what is happening around the world, and in the U.S.A. So much civil unrest and politically charged anger, intolerance and phobias. She sees what is happening within the confines of her own home; so much learning, growing, tolerance and love.

With each smile she casts toward a stranger and in each moment of eye contact with her family she shares a loving kindness because the world seems to promote disconnection but her very own heart urges her to find reasons to unite.

She read somewhere “all emotions are elaborations on the basic instincts of approach and avoidance”. She wants to experience emotions of bliss, happiness and joy. She wants to feel gratitude, connected and divine because those emotions are a part of her natural state of being. But she gets caught up in a snarl of “to-do” lists and her daily interactions with loved ones seemingly turns to being a chore rather than a gift and she finds herself scratching that ant bite again, keeping her gaze cast to the ground.

She takes moments. She makes moments. Moments to realize what actions to take, moments of action, she finds her own pace.

Reaching for peace within, embracing the practice of self-love, this gives her the strength and courage to burst into bloom once again.
